Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She was raised by both her mother and grandmother. She is an only-child. Scott went to an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit the college after a year of study and became a teacher's assistant. When she began her professional career, doing live poetry shows She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate as well as co-writing You Got Me. In the Roots performance, she announced herself as a musician. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she gained experience as an actor during the Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
